Teaching Philosophy

I believe that music is a tool that can be used to communicate across any boundary and connect people across disciplines. A voice is a gift that I believe every student should be allowed to discover and develop. As an artist educator, my goal is to provide a space for my students to learn who they are as individual artists and to explore how they can use their voice to engage with their community. My studio is open to students in grades 6-12. 

Students in my studio will learn the basic anatomy of the voice from the vocal folds to the primary muscles of inhalation. Understanding our voice as not only an instrument, but also a part of our body, allows us to learn how to best take care of it. I believe it is vital for young artists to learn the importance of vocal health at the beginning of their careers so that they can avoid vocal injuries in the future. 

Students will also have the opportunity to engage with music on various levels. They will learn how to break down a song and spend time looking at not only the music and poetry, but also learning about the life of the composer. I believe that a holistic approach to a piece allows us to better connect with not only the music but the audience with whom we are sharing our craft. My goal with students is to help them achieve this connection and explore the importance of engaging with their community.

My own experiences as an artist have shown me how music can be used to bridge the gap between disciplines and strengthen our understanding of different subjects. Coming from a background in the sciences and music, I am passionate about projects that bridge the gap between disciplines. I encourage students to bring their interests into the studio so that we can explore them through music. I believe that it is possible for students to explore their interests while continuing to develop strong technique. 

I strive to create a supportive learning environment driven by curiosity and passion for music. By the time students leave my studio, I want them to feel confident in their ability as independent artists to prepare repertoire with correct technique but also be able to engage with their repertoire on a deeper level. My hope for my students is that they can create careers singing music they are passionate about and share it with those who need it most.

If you are interested in studying with Miss Monner, please fill out the inquiry below. Miss Monner is currently accepting students; a musical background is not required, but heavily encouraged. Students should be able to read sheet music.
